Training and Retaining Employees
Yes, we see more labor done by machines/computers each year. And while such progress is to be desired–even pursued–and it is easy to accept the need for companies to constantly upgrade, too often little attention is paid executives and senior managers in upgrading their employees’ skills.
Experience has proven that skill is the easiest commodity to find in an employee. What is difficult to find is the character, commitment, loyalty, honesty, and passion that builds a winning, sustainable future for the company. You can’t find those qualities on a resume!
Companies who recognize the value of these traits focus on upgrading their employees skillsets and knowledge base as much (and in some cases, more) as in upgrading their systems.
Of course if you are going to train your employees you need to have a plan for that training to turn into additional career opportunities within the company. When employees that don’t see a future for themselves in the company they are more likely to leave. In that case, you end up training your employees for someone else.
Growing your employees, both through training and career opportunities is a sustainable strategy for growing your company. Companies who recognize this are the ones who lead their industry. Those who focus more on controlling costs and staying current with technology can survive, but they will never achieve an enduring spot among the leaders.
